Italy Not Finding Regard in World Cup Gambling
Jun 9th, 2010 by tang

You have to go down a little bit in the World Cup probabilities to find defending champ Italy.

Even though they won the championship four years ago, the Italians are not getting a lot of respect in World Cup betting.

World Cup probabilities name Italy at 10.5 to 1 to preserve their championship. Italy shows up behind Spain, Brazil, England and Argentina as the 5th choice in general to get the World Cup. Even a number of Italy’s supporters are not offering the squad much of a chance to repeat. Head coach Marcello Lippi was berated in the media because of the players he picked out for the World Cup lineup. Not making the trip to South Africa will be Fabrizio Miccoli, Antonio Cassano, Francesco Totti and Mario Balotelli.

Nevertheless, Italy is a hefty favorite to win Group F. Italy is -310 in World Cup probabilities to win Group F with Paraguay a distant second choice at 3-1. Slovakia is slightly over 6-1 while New Zealand is a big longshot. In this group, Italy is the squad that everyone will be observing. Italy will not have much goal scoring capability, so it’s likely that they will be watching a lot of low scoring matches. They actually have Captain Fabio Cannavaro who was good four years ago. He was FIFA world player of the year, and he earned the Golden Ball. This would be his fourth and also his last World Cup. He is taking a break from International play following the World Cup and he won’t probably return to Juventus.

Cannavaro not only has to cope with the Italian team, he furthermore has to cope with his own conditions. The lineup looks weak and head coach Marcello Lippi is supposed to depart after the World Cup. Lippi’s heir will probably be Cesare Prandelli.

A lot of experts are saying that Italy is simply too old to protect their championship in World Cup betting. The goal scoring is a major question mark, although they even so have goalie Gianluigi Buffon, defender Gianluca Zambrotta and midfielders Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo. Cannavaro is hoping to keep everyone together as the squad captain but there seems to be plenty of questions surrounding this Italy squad. The good news for the Italians in World Cup wagering is that Group F is not that challenging. Paraguay and Slovakia should fight for second place while New Zealand most likely won’t get a point.

With an enormous audience of more than 700 million viewers, the World Cup is the most popular sporting event in the world. With a few of exceptions, it is held every four years since the initial tournament in 1930. For the 18 events that have been held thus far, solitary 7 nations have won the event. Brazil heads the bunch with a record five titles. They are additionally the only team to play in every tournament. Italy is next with four titles, including the one they won last year. Germany has claimed three. Uruguay, Argentina, England and France complete the list with one title each. This year’s World Cup will start on June 11 and conclude July 11.
